A really good book to read on this topic is Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class, by Owen Jones. It’s based on the UK, where I grew up poor. And I think despite Singapore’s amazing success these past few decades, it’s really important to think about how not to “end up”. Many “older” cities and countries offer examples of systems that create a culture of demonising the poor, including London and the UK.
