  1. A really good book to read on this topic is Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class, by Owen Jones. It’s based on the UK, where I grew up poor. And I think despite Singapore’s amazing success these past few decades, it’s really important to think about how not to “end up”. Many “older” cities and countries offer examples of systems that create a culture of demonising the poor, including London and the UK.

  2. Wow, this post really hits home! I appreciate how you unpacked the reasons behind poverty and reminded us that it’s not just about making poor choices or being lazy. It’s a real eye-opener to see how systemic issues and socio-economic factors play such a massive role in people’s lives. The anecdotes you shared really highlight the struggles many face, making it clear that the “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality is totally unrealistic for some.

Given all this, I can’t help but wonder: What role do you think society, especially our generation, should play in supporting those who are struggling financially? It feels like many of us are caught in our own grind, but we often forget that not everyone has the same starting line. This question is important because fostering a sense of community and accountability can help bridge the gap and create more opportunities for everyone, not just the lucky ones. Would love to hear your thoughts!
